AI Knows Our Name. Does It Know When We Are Relevant?

We tested this on ourselves first. Give an AI assistant our name, The Million Token Window, and the answer looks good: it finds us, explains what we do and describes where we fit.

But that is the easy test. The more interesting question is what happens when nobody gives AI your company name. Does it still connect you to the problems you solve, the customers you serve, and the questions that should logically lead someone to you?

So we changed the test. Instead of asking about The Million Token Window, we started with the kinds of questions a potential customer might ask before knowing we exist. That is where the gap appeared.

AI could describe us once it knew who to look for. When the question started with the customer's need, we were often missing from the answer.

That distinction matters. Explaining a company someone already knows is a different question from who can solve a problem, which options are worth considering, or what would suit a situation best.

A company can therefore look fine when tested by name and still be missing from the conversations that actually create opportunities.

This is why a company's presence in AI answers is worth testing from more than one angle. A strong website, good SEO and an accurate answer to its own name can all exist alongside an absence from the questions that matter most commercially.

The useful question is not simply, “Does AI know us?” It is, “Does AI know when we are relevant?”

That is the kind of gap our GEO reporting is designed to uncover. Not just whether a company exists in AI, but how it is represented, where it appears, where it disappears, and whether it is being considered in the right conversations.

We found that gap in ourselves too. And it reinforces a distinction worth remembering: being known by AI is not the same as being part of the answer.

Every Thursday, What AI Sees looks at what AI finds, and what it says, when it looks at companies.
