Chukwuebuka Ugwu built the league he needed growing up
It started with a boy who thought being good at football would get him noticed.

Chukwuebuka Ugwu grew up in a small village with dreams of becoming a professional footballer. The boys he played with had the same ambition. They worked hard, and the people around him talked about how good he was. As he remembers it, “we thought one day someone would come and take us because everyone talked about how good I was.”
Beyond the village, he says, there was “zero visibility.” They didn’t even know they needed it. He describes his own football journey as a personal failure, one he puts down to a lack of opportunity rather than talent or effort.
He went on to build AfriSportPro, a youth football league and talent platform in Nigeria. One of his first decisions was to establish it in at least one state in each of the country’s six geopolitical zones. He wanted young players across Nigeria to have a chance to take part.
Regular competitive matches became the foundation. He had lacked that structure himself, and wanted players to have a consistent place to compete and improve. The league also actively promotes its best players to scouts, FIFA-licensed agents and clubs. Finding the people who could offer a next step became part of the league’s work. As he puts it, “Now, our players are not just playing and hoping on luck.”
Getting that league running meant earning the trust of clubs that had never heard of his brand. Finding sponsors proved harder still. It was, he says, “near impossible, to my surprise.” He ended up funding most of the cost of a national league that ran for more than three months, selling assets to help keep it going.
He grew up waiting for someone to arrive with an opportunity. Now he is doing the organizing, earning the trust and carrying much of the cost of creating one for other players. What he missed as a boy has shaped what he takes responsibility for as a founder.
